Like the iconic children's book character Waldo, the question on everyone's lips this afternoon was "Where in the world is Falcon?"
Falcon Heene is the 6-year-old boy who was feared afloat in his father's weather balloon. The release of the balloon from the family's back yard, resulted in a massive air search, tracking of the balloon and then fears that the boy fell from the silver balloon.
Well as we all know now, Balloon Boy, as the media has labeled him, was hiding in a box in his garage attic - which is exactly where every mother in the world knew he would be.
Or at least, every mother, except for his, knew that he had secreted him away in some cubbyhole in his home. Where else would a child go - after releasing his father's monster-size weather balloon?
It is easy to laugh about this now, I realize. Falcon did not crash land. Falcon did not fall out of the balloon and plummet to Earth. Falcon was not whisked into the heavens never to be seen again. Falcon stayed on Earth, floated back into his family's embrace, and surely after suffering a good, long talking to, will live happily every after.
Still, what kind of fear must his parents have felt? It is scary enough when you lose track of your child at the county fair, when they wander away from you in the museum, or when you lose them among the racks in the clothing store. It must have been terrifying to think that your little boy was lost among the clouds.
